Since I work from home, I often get cabin fever and find myself occasionally missing having coworkers (outside of my dogs) and being able to go out for lunch to get out of the office for a while.
Because I don’t have a “normal” office anymore, I often find that it’s helpful to take a break to do something to get out of the house. I often will go get lunch to get a good mid-day break in, but many times, if I don’t do that (or even if I do), I need an afternoon break as well.
That’s where some of my favorite things come into play. Taking a break during the day can help me recharge, reset for the rest of the stuff I have to do for the remainder of my work day. It allows me to “reset” and mentally take a break, which helps me work better as a whole.
I got a Jeep Wrangler last year and I really love driving it. It has enough room but still rides high like a truck. I will often drive it to go grab a soda or to the post office to check my PO box. It’s fun to drive, even though I’m mainly using it on city streets instead of off-roading. No matter what type of vehicle you drive, I recommend you go around your neighborhood for a few minutes and see how much better you feel (a walk works too).
Good Music on Pandora
If I just need to bounce around for a bit to get out the energy stored up from sitting for a long time, I will often put on one of my favorite playlists and dance to a song or two. Sure, it feels a little silly, but if you can even put your headphones in your office and jam out to some songs you love, what’s the harm? Good music can significantly impact your mood.
If you don’t know any good playlists, try using Pandora, like the True Tea Tunes station. They offer free and paid subscriptions.
I’ve enjoyed Snapple for many years (ever since high school), and their Straight Up Tea are no different. They have all kinds of flavor combinations and also offer caffeine free versions, which is great for when I’m trying to cut back on caffeine. The flavor offerings are Sweet, Sorta Sweet, Unsweetened, Sorta Sweet Honey Green, and Sorta Sweet Rooibos! The Sorta Sweet Honey Green is perfect if you prefer a less sweet, natural flavor. Drinks like Snapple Straight Up Tea are a great afternoon treat because they are a fun distraction and give you something to look forward to as an afternoon beverage. It’s a break from the regular routine of drinking water, which can get monotonous after a while. I’ve often journeyed to the Hy-Vee by my house to grab a drink and it definitely breaks up the afternoon and makes the day go by a lot faster.

Staying hydrated with a fun afternoon drink can also help you concentrate, as many people get headaches or lack of focus when they haven’t drank enough water.
I know it sounds crazy, but I really love running errands. It makes me feel productive and it feels so good to cross things off my list. That’s why if I have a lull in my workload and can’t really concentrate in the afternoon, I’ll take a few hours off to run some errands. I will grab things I need from the grocery store, deposit checks at the bank, or return some clothes that don’t fit.
Combine this with my love for driving my Jeep and a Snapple Straight Up Tea, it makes for a really refreshing afternoon that makes me feel less stressed out. Taking time for myself on these occasional afternoons help me stay more focused when I am working and helps decrease my anxiety levels.
While sometimes it can feel the opposite of productive to take a few hours off in the afternoon, I’ve found that it energizes me and actually makes my work better.
